Alan Adnan: Driver in Claremont Jetty police stand-off faces two more charges on top of armed robbery, damage

A man accused of driving a car off Claremont Jetty during a tense police stand-off has made a bizarre court appearance as more charges are considered on top of armed robbery, allegedly committed moments earlier. Alan Adnan was swarmed by tactical response group officers in dramatic scenes around midday on Wednesday, some three hours after police began trying to negotiate with the 32-year-old. A police prosecutor detailed how the “incredibly dangerous” situation unfolded in Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday while opposing a bail application by the Bull Creek man. From behind security screens, Mr Adnan vigorously waved and smiled at family members watching on from the public gallery. And after the sergeant said he had driven a red Jeep Wrangler erratically with three passengers inside on Walter Street — hitting a bin then a 57-year-old woman’s car after doing a sudden U-turn — Mr Adnan shouted: “Objection”. He objected again after the police prosecutor said he approached the victim and “began ranting nonsense”, insisting: “I was drugged”. The sergeant said the passengers got out of the Jeep after Mr Adnan retrieved a tyre iron from inside, kept ranting as he went back to the woman’s car then demanded a USB charger cable he spotted inside her vehicle. He allegedly held up the tyre iron threateningly as he did so. Nearby residents tried to calm him down but he climbed onto the bonnet of her car and struck the windscreen, the officer said. He said Mr Adnan jumped back into the Jeep, hit the bin again as he drove off then rammed a police car that blocked him in after he drove onto the jetty. He then allegedly reversed the vehicle before driving towards a police boat and plunging into the water. Mr Adnan climbed out through the window before sitting on top of the flipped and partially submerged Jeep. Several police officers jumped into the water and dragged him back onto the jetty, where TRG officers pulled him towards a waiting ambulance. He did not suffer any injuries and was assessed at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital as being fit for custody, fronting court charged with armed robbery and criminal destruction of property. The sergeant said the case was “very, very concerning” and police were considering also charging Mr Adnan with reckless driving and threats to do an unlawful act. The rammed cop car was significantly damaged, he added. “From what I’ve heard so far, this is very bizarre behaviour,” Magistrate Brionie Ayling said, questioning the man’s fitness to face court. His own lawyer conceded: “Yes, I did have concerns about Mr Adnan’s mental state”. He snapped at the magistrate when she addressed him directly, after he complained about being unable to hear through the screens. She explained he would spend the night in custody and have a mental health assessment before she would consider bail again on Friday. “My ears work perfectly, madam,” Mr Adnan said. “When are you going to ask me what actually happened? “I was drugged by a f...ing meth addict. My car was taken from me then then they f...ed off. “I’m a victim.”
